We believe in matching each person with the right types of therapy and prescription medications to give them optimal physical and mental health.

What is Sleep Deprivation Psychosis?

On average, adults should get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Teenagers and kids require even more than that. When someone establishes a pattern of not getting enough sleep, it is considered sleep deprivation. When someone goes long enough without sleeping, they can develop psychosis. Additionally, when deprived of adequate sleep, the brain has difficulty functioning at full capacity. This can mean a person has cognitive difficulties such as thinking clearly or making decisions. Sleep deprivation psychosis causes a person to lose touch with reality and have trouble distinguishing between what’s real and what’s not real. Psychosis also keeps a person from interacting rationally or effectively with others.

Symptoms of sleep deprivation psychosis can begin after going 24 hours without sleep and intensify as the person stays awake even longer. Because this lack of ability to sleep can stem from having a mental health disorder, it’s important to seek treatment for sleep deprivation psychosis.

Is Sleep Deprivation Psychosis a Mental Illness?

Sleep deprivation psychosis is not classified as a mental illness, but it can be a symptom of having one. In fact, sleep deprivation can contribute to developing a mental health disorder.

Types of Sleep Deprivation Psychosis

There are three types of sleep deprivation psychosis. The first is Acute Sleep Deprivation, which happens as a result of going just a few days or less without adequate sleep. Another type is Chronic Sleep Deprivation, which happens when someone does not sleep enough for three months or longer. Last, a person can have Chronic Sleep Deficiency, also known as Insufficient Sleep. This happens to people whose sleep is often disturbed and they do not sleep enough hours in a row. Treatment for sleep deprivation psychosis is available for all three types of this illness.

What Causes Sleep Deprivation Psychosis?

Sleep deprivation psychosis can happen as a result of several different reasons including:

Lifestyle: This includes leading a sedentary lifestyle, not establishing a routine of when a person gets up and goes to bed, and engaging in screen time within an hour of bedtime.

Poor habits related to sleeping: People go to sleep and stay asleep more easily if they have a dark, climate-controlled bedroom with no background noise. They should also avoid caffeine and heavy meals within a few hours of bedtime.

Overpacked schedule: Working too many hours or committing to too much in relation to education can make it difficult to sleep well.

Medical issues: Someone with chronic pain or who has an anxiety disorder often finds it difficult to get uninterrupted sleep.

Sleep disorders: Sleep apnea and sleepwalking can contribute to a severe lack of sleep. Seeking treatment for sleep deprivation psychosis will include identifying the source of the illness so a plan can be made to combat it.

As a person begins to heal from illnesses such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more, they find a new balance in how they sleep.

Effects of No Sleep

When someone goes without adequate sleep, it can impact their lives in several ways. The person becomes at risk of getting involved in an accident related to driving or operating machinery.
