What is Individual Psychotherapy?

Anyone who has not participated in individual psychotherapy in the past may feel unsure of what the sessions will be like. Beginning therapy can feel intimidating and frightening, but a skilled therapist will help the person ease into their symptoms. Our program for psychotherapy in Georgia matches the individual with a therapist prepared to help treat their mental health challenges.

Each session takes place in a private setting with just the therapist and individual present. Discussions take place related to the person’s specific mental illnesses, such as depression or anxiety. The two engage in give-and-take conversations about past events that may have triggered the illness, as well as current goings on that influence it.

In addition, the person receiving treatment can discuss everyday events that cause them stress. This allows them to target healthy coping mechanisms to use to keep them from automatically experiencing poor mental health symptoms. The goal of individual therapy is to help a person improve their mental health and be able to live meaningful lives that aren’t consumed by mental illness.

Types of Psychotherapy We Offer

Our psychotherapy in Georgia includes different types of therapy so that each person receives well-rounded treatment. The types of psychotherapy we offer include:

  • Psychotherapy: Traditional talk therapy forms the cornerstone for most individuals seeking help.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is among the common types of therapy and helps with several mental health disorders.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): This type of therapy combines cognitive behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies.
  • Psychiatric & Medication Management: A combination of talk therapy and the use of prescription medications to control symptoms of mental health disorders.
  • Holistic Therapy: This type of therapy sees a person as needing healing in three areas: mind, body, and spirit.
  • Family Therapy: Brings family members together with a goal of learning how to understand and support the loved one who is ill.
  • Brain Mapping: The use of non-invasive techniques to assess and understand a person’s specific brain activity.

Programs That Offer Individual Therapy

Because each person has different needs related to their psychotherapy in Georgia, we offer different levels of care. An assessment done during the admissions process will determine which program will meet the person’s needs.

The types of programs that offer individual therapy that we offer include:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Our highest level of care requires a person to travel to our facility for a full day of therapy sessions.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): This level of care works well for people who don’t need PHP or have already completed it. Therapy sessions are on weekdays for half a day.
  • Evening IOP: For people who have obligations during the day, Evening IOP can provide a helpful alternative.

What is an Individual Therapy Session Like At Novu Wellness?

Individual therapy sessions allow a certain tone to be set that helps the therapist engage in meaningful communication with the person while providing a level of comfort for each individual. Each session lasts around an hour and may take place anywhere from a few times a week to just once or twice a month. How a person progresses during their therapy sessions and which treatment goals they have met informs how often they visit with their therapist.

Some sessions will focus on one event, past or present, while others include several different topics. Sometimes the conversation is back-and-forth, while other sessions will feature the person being treated doing most of the talking.

Novu Wellness created a program for psychotherapy in Georgia that helps establish a bond between the therapist and the person they treat. From there, much progress can be made in resolving issues and reducing mental illness symptoms.

How Effective is Individual Therapy?

How effective individual therapy is depends on a few factors. It provides the best results when the person in treatment participates fully and doesn’t tend to skip some of their sessions. When they are open in their communication with their therapist, they are more likely to experience positive benefits from their therapy.

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) reports that about 75% of people who engage in therapy find it benefits them. It helps relieve many of their symptoms and helps them use healthy coping skills while in treatment and long after it ends.
